Creepy Clown Craze Hits Rotherham

There were unconfirmed reports that the creepy clown craze has arrived in Rotherham  this week. The craze, characterised by people dressing in clown costumes, and wearing grotesque masks and make-up before jumping out on unsuspecting members of the public, appears to have come over from the United States. There have been reports of creepy clowns scaring the public in many towns and cities up and down the UK in recent weeks, but nothing in Rotherham until last weekend.

On Saturday afternoon several shoppers on Bridgegate reported being scared and intimidated by creepy clowns to local police. “It was horrible”, said Bethany Walker from Ravenfield who had just come out of Macdonalds  at about 3.00pm and was walking towards the bus station. “There were about five of them . They just came from nowhere with this sort of death mask make up, vacant stares and weird muti-coloured baggy clothes. I just ran for it.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire police said they had sent a squad car to the area as soon as the reports were received, but found nothing unusual. We spoke to Ian Hardman, landlord of the New County on the corner of Bridgegate who was equally bemused. “I didn’t see anything,” he told us “A few of our regulars popped outside for a smoke about that time and they didn’t see anything either.”

Meanwhile, the creepy clown craze continues to grow in other parts of the country. Just yesterday, police were called to an incident in Lincoln and narrowly missed out on apprehending the perpetrators when their car backfired loudly and all four doors fell off.
