Evacuated Barnsley residents allowed back into homes after suspicious item turns out to be a Hoover

Residents of a Barnsley street were allowed back into their homes this afternoon after a suspicious item found in a property on Grott St in Wombwell turned out to be a Hoover. Residents had been evacuated earlier today after a visiting tradesman reported seeing ‘summat strange’ at the address.

Speaking through an interpreter, Inspector Danny Dingle from South Yorkshire Police (Barnsley Division) told The Bugle. “We were called to an address on Grott Street at 10.00am this morning following the report of a suspicious item by a member of the public. Initially we were unable to identify it and were preparing to carry out a controlled explosion. However we were fortunate to have an officer on secondment from Rotherham who attended the scene and immediately identified the item as a Hoover. Although we’ve now learned that they’re harmless, I’ve certainly never seen one in my 30 years in the police service in the Barnsley area and would like to thank the member of the public who came forward with the information.”

As The Bugle went to press, the street was still cordoned off as officers at the scene continued with attempts to deter sightseers.
