Barnsley pensioner, 92, still doing his own shoplifting

The world has rightly taken centurian Captain Tom Moore to its heart this week, but Barnsley had a heartwarming tale of its own as it was revealed that a 92 year old pensioner is defying Covid-19 and still continuing to do his own shoplifting despite the lockdown.

Sid Clunge from Wombwell did his first term in a young offenders institute during the second World War and has spent many years working for Her Majesty on an unpaid non-voluntary basis. While many of his former colleagues have either died or passed the mantle on to the younger generations, Sid says he sees no reason to stop just yet.

“I can still graft with the best of them” he told The Bugle “When I turn up at Tesco on my mobility scooter in my big overcoat they take pity on me – think I’m some harmless old duffer who feels the cold. Daft gets. I can get a full cooked chicken under that coat and it doesn’t even make a bulge. They even hold the door open for me on the way out. Easy.”

“We’re very proud of him” said Grandson Shane Clunge as he slipped a large savaloy into his inside pocket “I’ve told him I’ll lift anything he needs, but he’s having none of it. He even nicked some roll ups for ne last week. That’s what he’s like, always thinking of others.

I think he’ll just keep going until they catch him again.”
