Householders To Clear Snow From Road Or Face Prosecution Under New Plan To Keep Country Moving

Following this weeks’ bad weather, in which much of the countries road network ground to a halt, a leaked report has revealed a radical initiative to tackle the problem from next winter. Under the plans, which are bound to be controversial, every household in the UK will be issued with a snow shovel and allocated an area of carriageway outside their property, which it will be their responsibility to keep clear of snow.

The Department Of The Environment, which has formulated the plans, has laid out detailed instructions for exactly how the snow is to be shovelled and stacked, plus safety advice including the placement of warning triangles during the shovelling process,  and the requirement to wear  hi-vis jackets or vests. A website is to be set up , from where members of the public will be able to purchase the jackets, warning triangles, and a supply of rock salt to make their own patch of road safe. Shovels will be provided free of charge initially, but as with wheelie bins, there will be a charge if a replacement is required at any stage.

A spokesperson for the Department of The Environment said “If everyone pulls together, we can keep the roads clear and the traffic moving. I know that the maximum penalty for non-compliance of a five-year prison sentence may seem Draconian to some, but there will be special dispensation for the over 80’s, and anyone registered as severely disabled.  In addition to keeping the roads moving, we see a major potential health benefit, with many otherwise sedentary people, being forced off the sofa and into action.”

The Bugle understands that the plan covers all A and B roads, excluding dual carriageways, which, along with motorways,  will continue to be cleared by local authority vehicles as normal.
