Barnsley Couple Announce Plan to “Step Back From Frontline Benefits” and Work Towards Financial Independence

Barnsley high society was rocked to its core this afternoon, after a local couple dropped  the bombshell announcement that they intend to take a step back from frontline benefits and move towards becoming financially independent. Social commentators say the move is virtually unprecedented in local circles and are scratching their heads to work out how it might work in practice.

“We don’t want to let anyone down and have full respect for the role we’ve been born into.” said a clearly emotional Barry Wombwell as he held on tight to the hand of wife Maggie “but we want a different kind of life and the freedom to move away from the sofa and a reliance on day time TV and cheap roll ups. And we’ve got little Andy to think about. We want him to be able to eat a Greggs pasty in his pushchair, secure in the knowledge that it’s been bought and paid for.”

The Bugle understands that the Wombwells hope to take the transition in stages, and to that end, expect to be able to continue to stay rent free in Barry’s gran’s spare room and cadge plenty of free grub off Barry’s dad for now. “We don’t want to rush it” said Barry “We’re breaking new ground and it’s important we get it right.”
